What Binge Eating Christians Should DO

Hello, I’m Cheryl and I’m a former binge eating Christian. By God’s grace, I am no longer in a frequent struggle with this, and I want to help you get out of it, too!

So, you are surely asking, “How can I be freed from binge eating, too?”

First, know this is a question many binge eating Christians secretly struggle with, as I did for years. In my case, it looked like a cycle of crash diets, which I did for a short time, followed by overeating-or what many think of as binge eating. It also looked like using food to cover feelings I didn’t want to feel. Or how I put off stress. Or occupied myself when I was bored. Or as the most important part of a celebration.

In other words, I would eat when I was happy, sad, stressed, or…whenever. Food was my go-to for some form of solution and enjoyment in life.

Scriptural Help for Binge Eating Christians

If you relate to my story, I know you are wondering what you can do to break free from this, too. And I also know you feel like this is a hard issue to discuss among your church members. Ironically, God has provided these people for just such a problem. It’s true!

Here are just a few Scriptures that tell us that the brethren are the ones who are designed to help us during our times of struggle, sin, or despair:

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)

“Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.” (Galatians 6:1)

“So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” (Galatians 6:10)

“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:4)

Although we can be afraid or ashamed to come to our sisters in Christ for help and be open about these struggles, those who are mature are prepared to help you carry your burdens, pray with and for you, and give you wise counsel.

Practical Help for Binge Eating Christians

Of course, you and I both know that food cannot solve any problem other than physical hunger. Yet it took me more years than I’d like to admit to realize this truth and seek out a real solution. After living in the binge eating cycle for a while, we all come to see that what we really need is help with the deeper problems which are causing us to binge eat.

So to get you started, here are 10 very practical steps for binge eating Christians to take or areas to address:

  1. Read the previous blog post about praying about this issue first (Philippians 4:6)
  2. Spend time reading Scripture each day (2 Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 4:12)
  3. Don’t isolate from the fellowship of believers (Hebrews 3:13)
  4. Find a spiritually mature sister in Christ to confess to (Proverbs 27:17; Proverbs 20:15; Proverbs 13:20; Titus 2:3-5)
  5. Be humble and honest about your struggles (Ephesians 4:15; Proverbs 11:2; Proverbs 15:31-33)
  6. Get help from a theologically-sound professional (Psalm 1:1; Proverbs 12:15). You can click HERE to get a free, no-obligation call with me or HERE to find out about the upcoming immersive online program.
  7. Join or create a support group with other Christian women with binge eating (Galatians 6:2)
  8. Repent of idolizing food and putting it before the Lord (1 Corinthians 10:7 & 14; 1 John 2:16; 1 John 1:9)
  9. Learn how to eat based on hunger and satisfaction (1 Timothy 4:3)
  10. Eat with thanksgiving & enjoyment (1 Timothy 4:3-5)
  11. Set up your environment for success 1 Peter 5:8; Proverbs 4:14-15; Matthew 5:29)
